Become a Volunteer

The Bluewater Anglers are a not-for-profit organization formed in 1980 to improve fishing opportunities and promote fishing in the St. Clair River and Lake Huron. All Bluewater Anglers activities are run by dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers do not need to be fisher people. Our volunteers need to be interested in supporting our club in various ways. Hatchery volunteers need to be interested in learning about fish health and rearing.

We have opportunities for volunteers in the following Bluewater Angler activities.

Hatchery Operators

The Bluewater Anglers operate a fish culture station (hatchery) located along the St. Clair River just north of the Bluewater Bridges in the Village of Point Edward. We raise an average of 80,000 Chinook Salmon, 40,000 Rainbow Trout and 20,000 Brown Trout annually. The hatchery is run by a group of dedicated volunteers. There are groups of 4 – 6 people each day of the week who

• check the hatchery operations,

• clean the hatchery tanks,

• feed the fish in each tank and

• perform minor maintenance as needed.

Each daily crew is comprised of 4 – 6 volunteers who come in once a week for 1 – 2 hours. Our hatchery crews are large enough that volunteers can attend the weeks they are available.  We are well aware that most volunteers miss due to travel and other obligations. Shift workers are welcome hatchery volunteers.

Salmon Derby Committee Member

The Bluewater Anglers plan and organize the annual Salmon Derby which is held in late April – early May. The Salmon Derby is the Bluewater Anglers biggest fund raising activity. All proceeds go towards the hatchery operating costs.

The Salmon Derby Committee is a group of 12 – 18 volunteers. The committee work starts in late September and runs through mid May. The committee meets for 1.5 – 2 hours every other week.

Board of Directors

The Bluewater Anglers Board of Directors are a group of about 20 volunteers who organize and manage the club’s operations. The Board of Directors meet once a month for about 1.5 – 2 hours. One third of the Board of Directors are elected in January for a 3 year term.
